According to Dictionary.com, envy is a painful or resentful awareness of an advantage enjoyed by another. In 1 Corinthians, we are told that this is not an attribute of love. So if love is not depicted by envy, how are these two feelings contrary to each other?
Envy is longing for something that is not yours. This can impact a marriage in multiple ways. Think of the wife that wishes her husband was more like someone else or that she was more like another. Contemplate that moment when she wishes her marriage was…you can fill in the picture. It doesn’t take too long for envy to root it’s green thorny head into the rich soil of our marriage and life.
When this green-eyed monster appears, it may seem that we are painfully deprived of something we deserve. This is dangerous thinking! It makes us forget to notice what we truly have and how we have been blessed.
As envy roots its way into marriage:
1. Thank God for what He has already blessed you with.
2. Notice and express to your spouse what you appreciate about him.
